A type of progressive hair loss in women is called female pattern hair loss (FPHL) also known as androgenetic alopecia.  This is the most common cause of hair loss affecting up to 30 million women in the U.S.  FPHL has a distinct pattern on hair loss which occurs mainly on the top and crown of the scalp.
